ASSA ABLOY Australia is proud to be aligned with Habitat for Humanity; the organisation which prides itself in its offering of a “place to call home” to deserving families in need of a “hand up, not a hand out”.
Corporate support enables Habitat for Humanity Australia to work towards fulfilling its mission of providing decent and affordable shelter.
ASSA ABLOY Australia is giving back to their communities and staff through involvement with this not for profit organisation, demonstrating their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development defines CSR as "the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of the life of the workforce, their families, as well as the local community and society at large”.
Over the past 20 years, Habitat for Humanity has not only assisted with giving families their dream of home ownership but has also initiated the rebuild of communities affected by natural disasters.
The organisation is currently focused on building 25 new homes at the Yea Heights Estate primarily for families affected by the 2009 Saturday Bushfires, the worst natural disaster in Victoria’s history. “The homes are positioned for those who wish to remain in the general area, but lack the financial or physical capacity to rebuild”, states Phil Curtis, Executive Director Habitat for Humanity Victoria.
The bushfires caused a wave of destruction of mammoth magnitude not only to homes but also to human life. “We have difficulties comprehending the outcome even today, nearly four years after the event. As an organisation that provides safe, decent and affordable housing the question was posed, how can we respond to this situation – for those in need”, comments Phil Curtis.
On December 12, 2012, almost four years after the Black Saturday bushfires, two new homes were handed over to families at Yea. The young families were grateful and excited to be recipients of keys to their new homes – thrilled at the prospect of being able to move in, in time to welcome the New Year.
ASSA ABLOY Australia donated window and door furniture to the Habitat for Humanity Organisation, who utilised the product throughout the build of both homes.
Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, Phil was full of praise for the “efforts and contribution made by the volunteers and organisations involved in donating product and their time in ensuring the successful completion of this project.”
ASSA ABLOY Australia look forward to continuing the contribution of product to the Habitat for Humanity endeavor of providing a safe and secure environment for those in need - building homes, communities and hope.
